Registration began yesterday for the Huduma number and card in Kenya. Huduma translated as Service in Swahili. Huduma namba is a system where the government of Kenya is issuing unique identifier codes which is mandatory to all Kenyans and foreigners living in Kenya. This initiative is aimed at creating a single database of personal information of all Kenya residents. About 6 billion KES, the equivalent of 59.5 million USD is being used for this project under the National Integrated Identity Management System program. A lot of Kenyans seem to be confused and disturbed with this initiative, as there hasn't been clear reasons why there is a need for the numbers, and why the numbers will be linked with MasterCard for residents.

MasterCard, a world famous payment system has been linked to this registration which a lot of Kenyans find it a bit worrying. A message from the news room of MasterCard sought to explain what the Huduma Card was about and what the benefits of it were. >*The Huduma Card is a prepaid card with chip and PIN technology that will connect all Kenyans to the formal financial sector by providing a secure, reliable and flexible payment option. The Huduma Card, powered by Mastercard, is currently being issued by Commercial Bank of Africa (CBA), Diamond Trust Bank (DTB), Equity Bank and Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), with no bank charges being allocated to citizens when registering for the smart card. Kenyans will be able to pay for an array of Government services such as the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF), National Social Security Fund (NSSF) amongst others. Citizens issued with the smart prepaid card will automatically be enrolled in vital government services such as the National Social Security Fund and the National Hospital Insurance Fund, ensuring all Kenyans benefit from these initiatives.* A lot of Kenyans also have expressed concern that this could be the 666 the bible talks about. In Revelation 13, there is a mention of a 666 number as the number of the beast which signifies the coming of Jesus Christ. This has made a lot of Kenyans reluctant to register for the number and the card.
